Goings-on at the Green

Today was a bank holiday – we ignored it though and launched into school. We got through the first bit quickly and painlessly and finished all the written work including maths by 9.45, which is when Maddison arrived. She had come with Geoff who was playing soccer at the Longwood Green as part of the holiday festivities, leaving Pam to have a quiet day at home alone. Maddy had a bit of homework to do in preparation for the new school year which starts next week for the high school, but she came and sat on the couch with us for the readings. After school was finished at 11.30ish, they went outside to find the rest of the Piccolo gang, and went together to the Green to see what was happening. Nick and I walked across a little later too and watched (or rather, photographed) a bit of the soccer, then went home again, returning later in the afternoon for a boerewors roll which served as supper. Above - Michelle, the new locum accountant on the island who attends our church along with her Saint husband and two boys. The kids were backwards and forwards between here and there – lots of freedom to come and go. There was a trampoline and jumping castle for them so they were well entertained! As the day wore on there were other activities planned for the large crowd that showed up (nice to see the usually deserted playground so full of people and activity) which included pie eating contests and country dancing.

I don't understand how, in the 2 months we were there, we missed any of these kinds of events. Disappointing as it looked like everyone, especially the children had a good time!
